Punjab

The state of Punjab, in its present form, was established on November 1, 1966. It is a region with a rich and ancient history, being part of the larger historical Punjab region.

Geography and Demographics

Borders
The state of Punjab, India, shares its international border with Pakistan to the west. Domestically, it borders:
 * Jammu and Kashmir (Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh) to the north.
 * Himachal Pradesh to the east.
 * Haryana to the south and southeast.
 * Rajasthan to the southwest.
   The city of Chandigarh serves as the joint capital for both Punjab and Haryana.

 * Actual Population: 27,743,338 (approx. 2.77 Crore)
Languages Spoken
 * Official Language: Punjabi (written in the Gurmukhi script).
 * Major Languages Spoken: Punjabi (approx. 89.82% of the population), followed by Hindi (approx. 7.85%).
Religion (Present Day - as per Census 2011)
Punjab is the only Sikh-majority state in India. The major religious communities are:

Political History
President's Rule
President's Rule has been imposed on Punjab eight times. It was first imposed on June 20, 1951, making it the first state where this constitutional provision was used. The longest period of President's Rule in Punjab was for five consecutive years (1987–1992).

 * Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib), Amritsar: The holiest shrine of Sikhism, famous globally for its stunning architecture and spiritual significance.
 * Wagah Border, Amritsar: Known for the daily "Beating Retreat" ceremony, a popular tourist attraction for its patriotic fervour.
